We Reward Our Pets Here At Humane Society

October 4th, 2008

Normally when we think or talk about gifting, it is with the thought of our family, friends, colleagues and relatives. But there are other kinds of gift available like a pet gift basket. There are different types of pet gift baskets available and a person can easily buy it from stores or order it online.

Placing an order online is definitely preferable as you do not have to suffer the crowds, waste time going from one store to another and spend money on fuel. Pets give company to humans and are a source of comfort during bad times. Dogs especially work as guard dogs and ensure the safety of the house.

You can gift your dog with a pet basket filled with dog bones, chew toys, dog biscuits, special food items and clothes. Your pet will jump with joy on seeing the gift. So go ahead and gift your pet a wonderful basket filled with goodies and your pet will love you for such a great gift.

We Teach Our Puppies Tricks. There Reward - Gift Basket!

September 18th, 2008

Animals, especially puppies, are a man’s best friend. We treat them with respect and enjoy having them around. When they do something great, such as a trick, they should be rewarded. There are a few ways to reward a puppy. You could give them a chew toy, food, a bone, or a fine game of catch would be appreciated by your puppy. The gift you give your dog more so represents your style as a human then it does what your dos would really appreciate.

Dog gift baskets are a great way to be creative when giving your puppy a gift for performing a trick that was taught to them. The dog gift basket would be more than just a simple chew toy, or a single bone. It could be filled with a variety of items that they could choose from. Dog gift baskets could be filled with different chew toys and they could get their reward and choose their favorite type of chew toy from the basket. Other dog gift baskets could be filled with different types of bones. What dog do you know that doesn’t like a bone so what dog do you know that wouldn’t like to choose which bone they go for first?

The Strange World Of Doggie Gifts

September 3rd, 2008

Let’s face it; dogs are not great discriminators when it comes to gifts. A bone or a can of dog food (opened) are probably going to score highest on any canine list of must have gifts. This, however, has little or no bearing on how pet lovers choose gifts for their dogs. People anthropomorphize animals, especially pets. If we give a present to our own pet, what we choose says more about us than our animals. But we as humans have a complex and often contradictory relationship with our animals, particularly pets. The need to nurture and to show appreciation runs deepSo what makes a good pet gift? Food would be an obvious choice and just as in giving to other humans our instinct is to give something special or out of the ordinary. Chocolate is not a staple food of humans, but is regularly given as a gift. (It should be noted that chocolate is not a good gift for dogs as it is actually poisonous to them.) To be on the safe side the old squeaky toy is popular with our canine friends and may have the benefit of stopping them chewing your furniture.

Treats for Man’s Best Friend

August 18th, 2008

Many of us who have dogs in our home, treat them like loved members of the family. When I was a child, my German Shepard, Princess, slept on the bottom of my bed every night, making me feel safe and protected. There is a reason why, dogs are used to make the lives of patients in nursing homes and hospitals a little brighter. Dogs give us love, and ask nothing in return except for a warm place to sleep and some food. Our dogs listen to us when no one else will and they don’t make judgments. They certainly deserve a special treat from time to time, from gift baskets containing items than will make any canine jump with joy.

Dogs love to chew on bones, and deserve to be rewarded when they do what is expected of them. Every time your dog comes running when called, should be an occasion for a special treat to reinforce good behavior. Consider, Dapper dog biscuits, banana and peanut butter gourmet dog bones, from special baskets of food. A fun, squeaky chew toy will make any dog smile. A man’s best friend deserves the best.

Nothing Could Be Finer

July 29th, 2008

Nothing could be finer than the feeling you have when you walk out of an animal shelter with a pet that you have saved. I’ve done this a few times in my life and I can tell you that not only are you claiming a friend for life, but you are saving a life at the same time. It’s really a big responsibility and a big honor at the same time, and it feels so good you think your heart is going to swell up with love.

Look at the pets in a shelter you see so many faces of love. Some are large, and need room to roam. Some are small and need a warm lap to sit in. All of them have one thing in common. They all depend on the kindness of humans for their existence. If not for you, they will eventually loose their very life.

When you make room in your heart, in your home and in your life to have a pet, you make room for compassion and love to grow. You make room for more life and joy and happiness and love. I’m sure you are going to get that heart swelling feeling as well, and when you do remember, you deserve it! You have saved a life and now have a new love.

Go You Chicken Fat, Go!

July 24th, 2008

Adopting a pet is a big commitment. Not only do you need to keep them updated on shots and medications, they need regular exercise also. There are numerous ways to give your pet a workout, and you just may shed some pounds while doing it.

Dogs can be taken on walks or run free at a dog park. You can play catch with them or take them swimming. Whatever you choose should be fun for both of you. Cats don’t get a free couch potato ticket. Throw balls for them, dangle tempting feathery things, even play chase with them, they love it!

Keeping your pet fit is a life long responsibility, but can be fun and entertaining.

All Animals are Worth Saving

July 22nd, 2008

The State of Ohio is considering banning all pet owners from keeping a pit bull. The pit bull ban in the State of Ohio states that if the law passes, owners will have 90 days to surrender their pit bulls to the dog warden, then ten days or less after surrender, the dog warden will euthanize the pit bull.

This is an outrage! We do not euthanize lions or cougars and they are vicious. Why are we doing this to a breed of dog? This possibly could lead to extinction if other states follow suit. I don’t know what to call this… prejudicism, canine racism, breedism? Whatever you call it, it is wrong! These animals should be given gifts of love and compassion, not hatred.

Give the Dog a Bone

July 19th, 2008

Dogs chew, it’s what they do. Dogs need to gnaw on things to help control their tarter. It also strengthens their gums and promotes overall dental health. Another reason for chewing is boredom. Some dogs will chew shoes, kids toys, or even couches. A few will chew everything.

To help alleviate chewing problems, make sure Fido has plenty of doggie chew toys that taste better to him than shoes. Take him for a walk before work to help burn up energy. If he still chews, try crate training him and leaving only his toys in the crate. Buy inexpensive dog treats, such as the Bone-Appetite basket treats, for when he does something good.

Rest in Peace

July 6th, 2008

So you or someone you know has lost a pet. You have comforted yourself, your friend or you loved one. You’ve shown you care by giving a thoughtful a sympathy gift basket. Now what do you do? In many states, it is against the law to bury a pet in the backyard, although I’ve not heard of anyone being charged and prosecuted for doing so. Cremation costs between $50 and &350 dollars depending on the size of your pet. This is the cremation alone. It doesn’t include the cost of euthanasia or disposal of the ashes.   Burial in a pet cemetery depends on many factors from casket price to burial method, but I can guarantee is a lot more expensive than cremation. Choosing what you do with your pet in regards to his or her final resting place is dependent upon your wishes and what you can afford.

Helping Children Cope With the Loss of a Pet

July 3rd, 2008

When we take on the responsibility of caring for a pet, we do so knowing that in most cases,we will outlive them. As adults, we are aware of, and understand this, Even though it is painful, we cope. Children do not have the maturity to fully understand the concept of life and death. Kids also don’t understand grief, they just know they are sad. It is our responsibility to comfort and teach our children that death is part of life and to help them learn to grief in a positive way. Allow them to express their sadness and acknowledge their grief.  Gifts of remembrance are wonderful ways to help our kids through a confusing and tough time.

Surprise Fido

June 23rd, 2008

Dogs, they are man’s (and women’s) best friend. Well how about honoring them with a clever gift? I think that would please them don’t you think? Well, I’m no expert, nor am I a dog, but I think a gift for old Fido needs to be healthy, but fun and yummy. Humans aren’t the only life forms on Earth that should avoid artificially preserved foods. Gift baskets offer a variety or delicious snacks and treats, many of them very healthy for your dog and most come with exciting toys. Fido is sure to love these easy to eat healthy treats and fun toys.

Achoo! Does your Pet Have Allergies?

June 15th, 2008

Everyday humans suffer from irritating and sometimes even life threatening allergies. Believe it or not, so do our pets. When giving your pet gifts of food or toys watch for signs of allergies such as itching, sneezing or even difficulty breathing.

Common dog allergies are fleas, wool, food and pollens. Cats suffer from most of the same; food, fleas, pollen, plant and certain medication allergies. A veterinarian can help diagnose and treat allergies in your pet. Once recognized and diagnosed, allergens need to be avoided at all costs to ensure ongoing good health in your pet. Follow you vets recommendations and your pet should live a long and happy life.

Teach An Old Dog A New Trick

May 24th, 2008

A dog of any age can learn tricks and commands. Teaching your dog cute tricks not only is fun and entertaining, but instills the following of commands and enforces who is the alpha dog in the house. Instinctively dogs will aim to please the alpha dog, the leader of the pack. Work with your dog daily to reinforce that you are the boss.

Start off by breaking down the trick into a few small parts. Do not move on to the next part of the trick until the part before it is mastered. For each command followed correctly, give your dog a small treat or nibble of a goodie. Once your dog has mastered all the parts, put them together. When he performs the trick flawlessly, lavish him with gifts of yummy snacks.

Nail Clipping - Do You Have What it Takes?

May 13th, 2008

Clipping your pets nails for the first time is an adventure! My friend has two cats that needed their claws clipped. Since her cats are normally calm, she decided to give home clipping a try. She called me up to help.

I bought a pair of nail clippers at the pet store and  started with Buttercup, the calmest of the two cats. Lisa held her down while I clipped. I was very afraid of clipping too close and drawing blood, so I went slow. Buttercup was not patient and escaped several times. The claws got clipped, but it took 45 minutes. We were worn out and so was she.

Reeses, the other cat, was taken to the vet for his nail clipping - 3 minutes and $15 - well worth the money! If you have the time and patience, home clipping can be done, but the vet’s office is definitely quicker and less painful for us humans. Don’t forget to reward your pet for a job well done.  Dog gift baskets are typically the way to go!  TheBasketSpot.com has a variety of gift baskets that almost anyone will love.

Pet Care Insurance

February 27th, 2008

Sharing your home with a pet can be extremely joyful and rewarding.  Pets tend to easily win over our hearts and become loyal companions that we eventually depend on.

Unfortunately, pets do get sick.  They do get old, just as we do.  They also have accidents.  Some may fall down the stairs, or are easily acceptable to allergies.  What this means is that at some point we will need the expertise of a veterinarian.

If your pet needs to see a veterinarian, the last thing you want to think about is money.  Money should be your last worry.

That’s where PetCare Insurance comes in.  PetCare insurance is extremely affordable and easy to obtain.

Insurance is always something that will give you a great peace of mind.

Pets are precious!

February 24th, 2008

Pets are precious whether they are cats, dogs, tortoise or even a small mouse! How we wish we could be Dr. Doolittle and would be able to understand every word that our pets would utter. How we wish we could talk to them for endless hours and understand what they have to say in turn.

Pet care is one aspect that I would really want to understand as much as possible. Every pet is different from another. Its just like humans. Every human being has his own needs and likings. So does every pet! All you need to do is to understand your pet and provide him what it actually wants. It is good to know some general pet care tips that may prove to be helpful while taking care of your pet or if someone needs help. Look out for some great pet care tips on the internet as well as go for a pet care book. You would surely find some useful tips on the pet care.

Working Hard for Animal Protection

February 6th, 2008

At the Calhoun Area Humane Society, we strive to offer surrendered or lost pets the chance for a new life. We work all year round to provide the best care possible for pets as well as provide information to pet owners and fellow animal organizations.

We provide medical servicesand surgeries as well as temperament challenges to ensure the animal is adopted out to the right home. We also strive to ensure the animals in our care are tested for diseases such as heartworm and animal leukemia.

We believe that every pet deserves a loving home and we fight every day against animal cruelty and neglect to obtain our goal.

Visit the Calhoun Area Humane Society to find the perfect pet. If adoption is not for you but you still wish to help fight against animal abuse, you can sign up for donations or volunteer work. All your help is greatly appreciated by us and the animals we protect.

Donations: Helping an entire community

February 4th, 2008

Donations made to the Calhoun Area Humane Society are beneficial to more than just the animals in need of your help. Through donations, the humane society can provide food and other supplements to the animals, but also perform much needed surgeries and medication for injured or sick animals. Donations can be beneficial to the neighborhood as well. Donations provide for surgeries such as spaying and neutering of animals. Surgeries like these can help reduce animal overpopulation and the crowding of shelters, some of which still euthanize pets that have not been sold. Donations also help provide a sense of accomplishment for people looking for a small way to make a big difference.
